Dear Lactnet Friends:

Our children want to do dangerous things: ride horses, ice skate,
gymnastics, baseball. We parents do our best to minimize risk, and there is
no risk free activity.

Infants never choose formula. Baby's choice is always the breast.

The evidence is clear that formula is linked to multiple health risks.
Herein lies the difference between children riding horses or being fed
formula. A child injured in a horseback riding accident does not have an
impact on public health. Children fed formula do. Right now, in the US,
one-quarter of our potential fighting forces are too fat to fight,
oversized people are costing the health services systems more (bigger
hospital beds and diabetes, to name only two of many) and having an impact
on all of us.

Infant feeding is more than an individual choice; it is a matter of
national public health.

warmly,

Nikki Lee RN, BSN, Mother of 2, MS, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI, ANLC, CKC
