Unfortunately, I find myself agreeing with Dee Keith. The word
"discreet" is a trap, which is as likely to be used against
breastfeeding women as the original proposed wording is to protect
them. "Discreet" is open to interpretation by any security guard who
is completely ignorant of breastfeeding, in which case the mother has
clearly violated the law by breastfeeding in a manner not in accordance
with the security guard's personal beliefs, educational or cultural
background, or discretionary wishes. Multiply that one security guard
by every human being who occupies the space we call "public" and it
puts every mother at significant risk. We simply cannot demand that a
single woman subject herself to the requirement of satisfying every
other human being's criteria for "discreet" breastfeeding, especially
not in a breastfeeding-unfriendly culture such as ours.

As to the Ross rep who lobbied to have the language addressing the
importance of breastfeeding removed: his "right" to make these demands
is spelled M-O-N-E-Y. Who spoke up against his changes and in defense
of the original wording? What were the elected representatives'
responses? Did he combine forces with another powerful lobby?
