You know what we really need? We need someone to do a documentary in an
expose style on the politics of breastfeeding. If there were a story run
on tv that outlined the fallacies of the ABM is as good as breastmilk
allegation, that documents all the latest research, that compares our
discoveries to those on cholesterol and smoking, and then finally
compares how the medical community has handled this health issue
(aggressive education on smoking and cholesterol, spineless approach to
breastfeeding because we don't want to make them feel "guilty"), I think
that a massive outrage might be induced. This topic needs to approached
in the "60 minutes" fashion, ie, "why weren't we informed before?  Who
is holding all the cards, and why?"  Handled in this manner, bottle
feeding mothers would not feel guilty because they would know that they
had been misled, and grandmas would back down on their "you turned out
fine" rationalizations when confronted with the real facts.  We give out
this same information in our classes, but we are all too often framed as
the "radicals", and then discounted. A major documentary would carry much
more collective weight and could easily serve to stir up the whole
country! What do you all think? Should we campaign with a particular news
show to go after this?
