Got a wonderful call from a local mom whose 10 day old is in a NICU
recovering from surgery to repair a bowel rotation. The surgeon is
insisting on breastmilk feeds for the baby (much to the mom's surprise, who
thought she'd have to fight for that.) Plus, get this ~ the staff asked her
to climb into the baby's crib to co-sleep in order to reassure the baby.
Mom was scared to, and wanted my opinion. I urged her to follow their
suggestion and told her about Nils Bergman's work. She can use the breast
as a pacifier because bfg is analgesic (L. Gray et al, Pediatrics 2002).

While there is resistance to new ideas and some things change all too
slowly, I just love to get a call like this out of the blue that catches
everyone acting just as they ought to. See, all the hard work of the
brilliant researcher in our field does make a difference!
