Euhm... why is noone suggesting to investigate this mom's problem...?!
Isn't this something very worrying?
Is it fair to say: "Stop pumping and feeding that breast and if the bleeding
stops, the problem is gone"...? :-s
I'd say this bleeding has a cause and the cause should be investigated.
Am I way off track here or what...?

Bye,

Subject: [LACTNET] BLOOD! More

Permission to post. Big time permission.

Thanks in advance for your solutions and experiences! Mine are very
limited.

Jay

Hi Jay,

As you know, ----- is now 10 months old and has been exclusively breast fed.
Since going back to work in May, he gets pumped breast milk in a bottle and
as he's gotten older and more active, he is not interested in nursing, so he
now gets all of the milk I pump in a bottle and nurses only once first thing
in the morning when he wakes up (he's slept through the night, so he's
hungry and snuggles in bed with me and nurses, wakes up, and plays). Since
May, I've had some supply issues so take domperidone for supply and with the
medication and pumping 6 times a day, I almost always can cover --------ıs
needs.

About 4 weeks ago, I started pumping very large amounts of blood (unrelated
to any nipple cracks/nipple issues). The blood was actually spraying from
the milk duct and would start almost immediately once the pump was turned
on. I could easily pump an ounce of more of blood if I didn't stop the
pump. I saw a breast specialist/surgeon and she was concerned that b/c of
the amount and frequency with which it was happening, I had some internal
trauma to one of the milk ducts (likely ruptured it) and if the bleeding
didn't stop may need to stop using that breast. I decreased the amount of
pumping on that side dramatically and the bleeding finally stopped after a
week. My breast was also very tender and sometimes had radiating burning
pain either under the nipple or throughout the breast.

Once the blood stopped and the pain subsided, it took me another week to
work back up to the normal pump schedule and regular supply. Well, it
happened again (pumping blood) this weekend and this time there is such
intense pain and burning in my breast that it brings tears to my eyes to
pump, even on the lowest setting. I spoke with the breast surgeon again,
and she wants me to "shut down" and stop using that breast, which means I
will more than halve my milk supply (b/c the non-injured side is the "dud"
and produces less) assuming the one breast keeps functioning at the same
level.

Emotionally I am not ready to stop pumping/breast feeding b/c really wanted
to get him to the year mark. I cannot make it without supplementing now b/c
the right side simply won't be adequate, and since I will have to stop the
domperidone, it could dramatically reduce what I can pump on the right side.
I don't want to injure the breast, but really want to find some middle
ground. I've also started taking Motrin for the pain, which actually (and
surprisingly!) has helped. At least one person has advised me NOT to shut
down the breast and to simply pump less, continue taking Motrin, use ice
packs, try to actually nurse on the injured side b/c Gabriel will get all
the milk he needs in a much shorter time than it would take me to pump it
out, and to use cabbage on that breast. Then, to transition --------- from
so much breast milk to more solid foods and a homemade goat milk "formula."
This could buy me some more time.

So, need some advice. I cannot ignore the pain or blood, and right now, the
pain is the bigger issue. When I pumped in the middle of the night last
night, got no blood, but had burning pain for an hour afterwards (dulled a
bit by the Motrin).

Let me know your suggestions.

Thanks,

[Momıs name]
