Dear Friends:

Jacquie describes her situation beautifully, and has all my sympathy.

I had a similar mother in my office last night, with a 4 month old that 
has gained "only 4.5 pounds" since birth. As with Jacquie's son, this 
baby is sparkling, like a star. Very bright, totally present, following 
a conversation with her eyes, mostly content, totally healthy. All the 
developmental milestones one loves to see in this little darling. Yet, 
the mother has been frightened by physicians because the numbers aren't 
right.

The mother has eliminated liquid cow milk from her diet and seen an 
improvement in spitting up and fussiness. I suggested a visit to a 
pediatric allergist.

Like Jacquie's baby, this little girl has siblings, all large. The 
mother is above average height and a bit heavy....but just had a baby 4 
months ago, so I can't count on that appearance. The mother nursed all 
the others for a year or two. Now here is this  #4 l bundle of 
brilliance.....who isn't following the family pattern.

Would some enlightened physician please make sense of this craziness 
for me? I believe that if a baby has something wrong with it, it won't 
act right. If a baby is acting right, then whatever else is going on 
must be okay because central nervous system function is the highest 
level of function. If the CNS is fine, and the baby is having fun and 
fully participating in life, then why should the number of pounds 
matter?
