I need help in directing mother's search for a reason why her 20-month-old
toddler is refusing solids. The little boy is almost completely bf.
Attempts to give him solids fail. He may eat cottage cheese with berries
2-3 times a week a total of 10 oz, about 10-20 oz of kefir a day, about 5
Tbsp of soup a day and some meat 2-3 times a week. Hemoglobin was 86 and
five days later dropped to 76. Mom's hemoglobin is 144. Doctors blame it
on bf, saying that breastmilk is very filling (most of the time doctors say
it is no good after 6 months, so it is an unusual statement). Mom was
allowed to keep 2 nursings a day, no nursings at night (gives diluted juice
instead). She followed this regimen for two days. Her son is not eating
any better, he is not asking for milk either. In fact, after trying to
make him eat, he is hysterical about the word "eat". The mom doesn't know
if she should go ahead and wean completely or go back to nursing full time
so her son will get anything at all.

I almost don't have any ideas at all. I have a feeling there is an
underlying problem unrelated to BF. I know the boy needs immediate
attention because of the low iron level. Me fear is that if there is indeed
another problem weaning can make things worse. Location of this case -
Russia. So any ideas about directing the mom would be appreciated.

Natalie Wilson.
