This is just food for thought but with the recent thread about charting
during the postpartum periods, we have to keep in mind that we work with a
broad range of women and some may see having to chart as a barrier. (and
granted some will find it helpful)
The early postpartum period can seem so overwhelming....for example, lots
of my moms report that someone told them to switch a safety pin back and
forth on their bra to remember which side to start with and they can't
remember if they should start on the side with the pin or if that's the
last side they used....if I told these moms that they had to keep track of
the chart and a writing pen and check off feeds, pees and poops, they would
be even more frazzled.
I support Dr. Newman's approach of teaching moms to watch for the pause,
keep an eye on the poop color changes and look for wet diapers. I don't
like labels but I think charts are wonderful for people who are use to
functioning with their left brain, are literate and have experience with
charts. I am amazed when I'll meet with a mother of a twelve week old and
she'll show me a journal of every single input/output in the youngster's
life. That's great. I'll often try charting with a mom who is worried
about weight gain, is worried about her baby's urine output..but only after
a concern has been identified. To ask/expect/assume 100% of new moms to do
charting would inhibit some or add yet another burden of breastfeeding.
At best I hope charting is presented as a tool they MAY use if it's
helpful, not something they HAVE to do to be a successful nursing diad.

My .02 worth from Colorado where it's -9 (f) without wind-chill,
