Hi Amy, I had a few moms who were really gung-ho to breastfeed give up from the unbelievable nipple pain and I had observed that the nipple areola space seemed stiff like scar tissue. After that, if a mom had approached me post surgery, before birth, I tried to assess area for any stiff scar sensations and encouraged her to massage gently to soften before arrival. ThIs is purely anecdotal.
