One the subject of breast pump comparisons, one of our local hospitals
recently asked if we had any knowledge of the Spectra breast pump. I don't
know anyone currently using this pump but as there seems to be a burgeoning
number of electric pumps making the claim to be closed system, dual-phase,
multi-user grade pumps, but at a much lower price point to others currently
used i.e. Symphony, I asked around and have put together the following
points that could be considered when looking at any pumps.

. Evidence based research that supports the manufacturers
pump design and claims

. Motor life span / life cycle hours (i.e. Symphony 10 - 15
years)

. Suction range and speed adjustments (compared to existing
high-end pumps)

. Warranty (and location of manufacturer / supplier)

. Service and repair requirements and program

. Replacement parts availability

. Milk collection kit quality, types and availability i.e.
single & double etc

. Additional parts i.e. range of flange sizes

. How the closed-system used actually works

If working within a facility, the clinical engineering / biomedical services
department may be able to help by reviewing the technical specifications.

I know this doesn't answer the question but can hopefully help guide when
looking at the growing number of personal use as well as multi-user pumps.

Subject: SPECTRA BREAST PUMPS

Hi everyone, I seem to recall there was some mention on the list of the
Spectra pumps a while back but don't remember much resulting discussion.
Just wondering if anyone has heard of, or know anything much about, the
Spectra breast pumps? They have 3 or 4 different styles and retail between
$200 - $330.http://spectra-baby.com.au/They were on show at the recent ILCA
conference in Melbourne & were being given out to lactation consultants to
trial. Apparently, they are relatively new to the Australian market, but
have been getting very good reviews from mothers as being an effective yet
very affordable hospital grade closed system double electric breast pump,
although I have also heard a couple of less than positive reviews. Has
anyone heard much about them from mums, other B/F counsellors, HCPs or LCs?I
would be grateful to hear any information, reviews or experience anyone has
had with them.Warm regards, Debbie Dixon IBCLC CIMI PMC (infant
