I think it is the BEST attitude.All the mammals are behaving like that.
As a dog breeder that had many whelpings I am doing the same, first drying 
the puppy, stimulate and evaluate him and then he is going immediately to his 
Mom to nurse even before the placenta is out which stimultes it to go out.
I think it is the MOST NATURAL way.
