Celiac disease tends to run in families so why take the risk. This is an interesting article in the NY Times about heredity, genetic testing and celiac disease : http://consults.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/13/genetic-testing-for-celiac-disease/

If all it takes is a swab of the cheeks, why not get tested to see if there are the celiac markers. If baby does not have these, no need to be gluten free unless the whole house is.

and this is a celiac website that has some good info.

Personally, unless someone is hell bent on having a celiac diagnosis, I don't get the warning "don't go on a gluten free diet until celiac has been diagnosed". As my daughter puts it.. "when I give Alex gluten, he throws up and has diarrhea, when I feed him a gluten free diet, he gets better - so why would I make him sick to have him tested and be told to avoid gluten?" I am in the same boat. Fortunately we know a lot more than the average person about diet and nutrition so we are comfortable that we can eat a very healthy diet being gluten free.

Celina Dykstra, LLLL, IBCLC, Gluten intolerant, perhaps with celiac disease but unwilling to do a gluten challenge - I like feeling good too much to mess with the system and would rather spend the money on something fun and delicious!
