One WIC location, I believe it's in Madison WI, gives out the pedal
pump but asks for a deposit of $25. If mom returns it when no
longer needed, she gets the $25 back. If it doesn't come back, the
$25 basically covers the cost. (I don't know what they do about the
pump kit. The cost (to the agency) of that would be less than the
cost of the battery/elec pump.) This is a way to make a double pump
available to the mom at minimal cost both to her and to the agency.
As we (the Lactation Consultants at our hospital) take over the pump
rentals from our retail pharmacy, we may set up a similar program
for our moms with NICU babies. They already have the kit since
they've used it in the hospital. Most moms can come up with the
$25. In those cases where it's truly a prohibitive cost, it could
be excused.
