There was an excellent book/booklet on mastitis a few years back by the WHO
I beleive. It is an excellent resource and differentiated between
inflammation and infection I beleive. Often mothers have mastitis that is
fairly localized and they do not feel terribly bad - yet - and this can be
managed by effective drainage of the breast, usually via nursing the baby
only, and resting, and sometimes also using over the counter
anti-inflammatory medication. Sometimes a mother's physician or other
primary provider will write mother a prescription for appropriate
antibiotics and ask mother to get the medicine if usual measures do not
resolve the situation in a day. When a mother generally feels pretty lousy
and has headache, body aches, and sometimes fever, in addition to the
localized breast signs and symptoms then most health care providers would
treat with a course of antibiotics in addition to the usual measures.
