Often toddlers between 15 and 30 months nurse more at night because
(1) there is too much going on during the day to bother eating -- either
nursing or solids and
(2) they are teething, and daytime activities distract them from the
discomfort, but at night there is nothing to do but lie there and fret
because their mouth hurts

9 times out of 10 if you ask the mom to look in the baby's mouth, you'll see
teeth cutting through the gums. Baby Tylenol before bedtime can help, as
can lots of hard things to teeth on during the day. The main thing, though,
is that the mom and dad realize that the baby is hurting and needs comfort,
of whatever kind, and can be more compassionate.

My colleague Jeff knows that "teething" is my answer to everything until
those 2nd molars are through the gums. His 27 month old has been cranky and
whiny all night and they were at wits' end and I *finally* convinced them to
look in Max's mouth, and sure enough, even though it was 3 months "late" --
all four second deciduous molars were cutting through at the same time.
