I'm married to a physician, and I am constantly horrified by the incorrect breastfeeding information that physician's distribute. Two weeks ago, my own family medicine doctor told me that if I started taking antibiotics, then I would have to stop breastfeeding. This is contrary to to her very own specialty's statement on breastfeeding and medication! The American Academy of Family Physicians' Position Statement on Breastfeeding says "Almost all prescription and over-the-counter medications taken by the mother are safe during breastfeeding. Several resources are available to help estimate the degree of drug exposure an infant will receive through breastmilk.7,47,52 Physicians must weigh the risks of replacing breastfeeding with artificial feeding against the risk of medication exposure through breastmilk. Even a temporary interruption in breastfeeding carries the risk of premature weaning, with the subsequent risks of long-term artificial feeding"
(http://www.aafp.org/online/en/home/policy/policies/b/breastfeedingpositionpaper.html). So, even when the information is out there and easily accessible, the wrong informaiton is STILL being given.

I think that we have to tackle it one case at a time. I am writing a letter to my physician with some information and references (she also gave me incorrect information about birth control). I was so upset at what she said because I realized that countless moms have probably stopped breastfeeding after hearing the same thing from her or another doctor. Luckily, I know better.
