A study from Australia "Birth Events, birth experiences and social
differences in postnatal depression" Australian J. of Public Health
1994;18:176-184 sample size 771, showed that women who bottlefed from birth
had 2x the risk of having PND at 8months compared with women who breastfed
from birth. Women who had stopped breasfeeding by 3 months had 1.76x the
risk of having PND at 8 months compared with those who were still
breastfeeding at 3 month. This study was population based. The researchers
sent out questionaires to all mothers who had given birth during a
particular week in Victoria.119 out of 771 were found to be depressed on the
Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, having a score of 13 or over. Carolyn
