About 11 years ago when I was working on a postpartum ward I was also
completing a return to work rehab program following a car accident on the
way to work. One of the things we investigated was how to decrease the
strain on my neck and back whilst assisting mothers with breastfeeding. What
we ended up using is what I can only describe as a saddle on wheels! It was
a seat, on castors. The seat it self was like a very small saddle, and the
height was adjustable. This meant that I could straddle the seat, and scoot
it right into the side of the bed or chair. Especially when mums where in
bed I could often tuck my knees under the bed which got me nice and close.
This particular piece of equipment was purchased just for me, but because I
was only working part time as I increased my hours to full time many other
midwives borrowed it and commented on how wonderful it was. I don't know
what eventually happened to the chair as I went to work in labour and
delivery after I had completed rehab. Incidentally, it was an occupational
therapist that provided it, perhaps that would be a good place to start
