A significant number of our patients are preterm and low birth weight infants, and thus I'm sharing this new study, which found that "babies born to women with hearing loss were significantly more likely to be premature and have low birth weight," as reported in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.  

It's well-known that infants who are artificially fed experience a higher incidence of acute otitis media as well as recurrent otitis media, and recurrent otitis media is a risk factor for permanent hearing loss.  To my knowledge, the researchers did not look at how the hearing-impaired mothers were themselves fed as infants, although that would be an important aspect to study.
