My DH is a research technician in the Dept of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the
ECU School of Medicine. His primary support has been in diabetes research but
lately been toward teaching materials like self guided study units on the
computer. (it scares me a little to think that medical students are learning
anatomy on a computer by themselves instead of in a lab with a professor!)
His major in college was Wildlife Biology and he spent a couple of years
doing research on milk goats in college so he appreciates the value of
species specific milk! He is very supportive and is very vocal about
encouraging collegues to bf when they announce a pregnancy at work. He has
learned alot over the past 19 years and I think he could be grandfathered in
as a LC!
Being a state employee means we don't have a good source of income there so
we also own and operate a lawn care service. Mowing grass makes alot more
money then being at a univesity! Especially in this heat wave. People will
pay anything this week not to have to cut their own grass!
He and my 17 yr old son can easily do pump rentals and sales in my absense.
If a question is over his head, he knows where to look it up and tells the
mom where he is reading from. He is also good at finding me whereever I am to
make sure he did the right thing!
I know my 17 yr old son has learned from the many bfing conferences he has
attended over his life. When he was 7 yrs old, he answered the phone when a
teary voice asked for me. He held the phone out away from his head and
hollered out " Mom this lady sounds like she's got sore nipples".
My 19 yr old is majoring in Marine Biology with an intent on research. She
says that while mothering and bfing was fine for me as a career path, her
life ahead will not include pregnancy or children. I have not burst her
bubble but that is exactly what I told my mother in 1970 when I set out to
save the world. I wrote a letter to Reader's Digest in the early 1960s when I
was about 10 yrs old, after reading an article in there on UNICEF and
announced plans to go to work with UNICEF improving infant nutrition and
mortality. My mom told me recently that although I did it on an alternate
path, I am fulfilling that dream.
My 10 yr old still remembrs nursing and calling it "duice". He is very vocal
about why moms don't breastfeed. He will announce in public "look at that
baby. He needs to nurse" whenever he hears a crying baby. He also can point
out a dirty bottle very loudly!
This is a great idea-when we meet at conferences we always talk about bfing
and cases, but seldom do we talk about our lives. It's nice to see that we
are real people!!
