I very much like Mohrbacher's teaching sheet for Ameda on building a full milk
supply with a pump - - lovely instruction on how to build the supply, set the
supply, and how to increase the volume again, should it decrease by doing
more frequent pumping and longer pumping (the latter info is on the back of
the page). Seven pumpings a day for a 7 week old baby is not enough, and
it's not enough for a dropped supply - - wouldn't be enough nursing sessions
for many exclusively breastfed babies at that age, and certainly wouldn't be
enough nursing when babies are going through rapid growth spurts and drive
the maternal supply by periodically cluster-feeding, something I call The Baby
Buffet in order to normalize cluster-feeding. In teaching mothers about the
normalcy of The Baby Buffet, I compare the newborn who is expected to
double birth weight within 4 to 6 months to the teenager who seems to always
be hungry due to her/his rapid growth, but the teenager will not do anything
as dramatic as double his/her weight in 4 to 6 months, even if it were possible
and healthy to do so. The newborn is expected to triple birth weight within a
year. A teenager cannot triple their weight in 12 months, yet everyone knows
a teenager is "always" hungry, and in a wealthy society (never mind the
current economy), we can feed our children by growing food in a garden
and/or or purchasing food with our income or with food stamps, giving more to
the baby who baby-signs "more", to the toddler who can ask for "more,
please!", and to the teenager who eats and eats and eats some more. When
parents of teenagers say that their children are eating them out of house and
home, everyone knows this isn't a true complaint but a good-natured
celebration of such dramatic blossoming. On my written recommendations to
parents at the end of an outpatient consult, my list of recommendations
always includes "Celebrate diaper changes!" and "Expect and celebrate The
Baby Buffet!"

Diana West's book on breast reduction and increasing milk supply is
tremendous, with wonderful info on galactogogues as well as a great
description from a mother on the use of biofeedback for stimulating MERs.
West & Marasco's book on "Making More Milk" is an extraordinary help from
front to back. The information on galactogogues is something I have found to
be especially helpful, as well as the recommendation for mini-pumpings over a
four hour period. Diana West and Lisa Marasco, if you're reading this, many
thanks from this LC for all your work.
