mahuang is the chinese name for ephedra. it speeds the thyroid and increases the nervous systemand the rate of motabolism of food and fats.It is contraindicated in pregnancy and latation as it is a uterine stimulant and can cause miscarriage. not to be used if you have diabetes kidney disease or usingan MAO inhibitor. Structurally it is similar to  adrenaline. It does contain cardiac glycosides. 

it is approved for short term use in children and adults with bronchospasms and asthma. by the germ Comm. E. and used for this in traditional chinese medicine.
