As a former non-RN LC, I must add that the tide goes both ways. I am
appalled at hospitals that hire RNs lacking LC certification or are happy with
weekend or week long certification programs for their lactation specialists. It
bothers me that even an LPN has higher hiring status than an IBCLC with 10
years experience. If speech pathologists, occupational therapists, social
workers, and physical therapists do NOT need an RN--why are Lactation
Consultants expected to have them in MOST hospital settings? It goes back to the basic
issues that we have been discussing--formal LC educational programs and
licensure.
