Found this:
Out of CT in Jan 2010:
http://www.happiestbaby.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/ct-dcf-sbs-project-evaluation-jan-28-2010-1.pdf

And this from 2009:

"Effectiveness of Educational Materials Designed to Change Knowledge and Behaviors Regarding Crying and Shaken-Baby Syndrome in Mothers of Newborns: A Randomized, Controlled Trial"

Findings of PURPLE CRYING Study by Barr, et al. as reported in Pediatrics, March 2009

1,374 Intervention mothers received PURPLE 11-page booklet and 12 min. video
1,364 Control mothers received 2 brochures and DVD about infant safety

Crying information: PURPLE information, i.e. Persistent, Unpredictable, Resistant to Soothe, etc.
Crying Response instructions: Increase “carry, comfort, walk, talk.”
Unsoothable Crying instructions: Walk away, calm yourself.
Shaking information: Never shake or hurt an infant.

Intervention vs. Control
Knowledge:
Crying 6.2% higher score (69.5% vs 63.3%)
Shaking 1.3% higher score (84.8% vs 83.5%)

Behavioral Responses:

To Crying Generally No difference
To Unsoothable Crying No difference
Walk Away/Self-Talk response to Unsoothable Crying No difference

Sharing Behavior:

Walk Away Info 6.5% higher score (41.4% vs 39.9%)
Shaking Info 5.6% higher score (35.3% vs. 29.7%)
Crying Info 2% higher score (58.4% vs. 56.4%)

Infant crying: 13.8 min more in PURPLE (158.1 min vs 144.3 min)
Contact when distressed: 8.6 min more in PURPLE (102.6 min vs 94.0 min)

Intervention mothers scored 6% higher in knowledge about infant crying and 1% higher in knowledge about shaking. These slight increases in knowledge had no effect on mothers’ behavioral responses about crying in general, unsoothable crying specifically, and self-talk regarding unsoothable crying.

Intervention mothers did not increase information sharing about crying with other caregivers. They did score 6% higher in sharing advice to walk away and 5.6% higher in sharing shaking information.

The daily frustration levels, pick-up events during infant distress, and walk-away events during unsoothable crying did not differ significantly between the two groups. Parents in the intervention group did hold their baby during distress longer In a study by Barr using the same Seattle protocol and reported in the Canadian Medical Journal (March 2009,) mothers who received the PURPLE materials walked away from their babies during inconsolable crying twice as often as controls.

The finding of increased crying in the intervention group is concerning. Intervention mothers reported significantly more infant distress (fussing, crying, unsoothable crying) – 14 minutes more; they also reported more maternal-infant contact to address the distress – 9 minutes more than the control group.

The effectiveness of the PURPLE materials in reducing SBS and other forms of inflicted infant trauma remains to be examined, as does the impact of increased infant distress and increased walking away on such factors as Post Partum Depression, breastfeeding failure, marital stress, sibling or spousal abuse, decreased bonding, etc
