Laurena,
Look for work to be published by Peter Hartmann. We were lucky enough to
have him as the speaker for our state affiliate "Breastfest" 1 1/2 weeks
ago. He has been doing research on human milk since 1978. His
presentation was based on research projects of his graduate students.
Fascinating! Anyway............what really blew me away was that the
amount of breastmilk ingested by a baby in a 24 hour period stays pretty
much the same for the first 6 months (this is after about the first 4-6
weeks when baby is gaining and growing and doing fine)!!! And the reason
that the amount of milk doesn't substantially increase is because the
milk itself is different, changing with the needs of the baby. He has
been able to prove that by measuring the breast volume of the mother. He
has a machine constructed and designed by him and his students that has
gone through 3 evolutions to measure the volume more precisely. His
presentation was all "power point", but we didn't get any handouts
because he said the info is changing and hasn't been published yet. When
asked, he said that they hope to publish most of it this year.

Warmly,
Pat Bucknell, IBCLC
