Alice,
I have talked with Pediatricians and OT/speech therapists who say placing the
baby on their stomachs is the best position for Reflux. By the anatomical
design of our esophagus and stomach, they are in better alignment when prone
than supine. There are special wedges made and sold to be used with babies
having Reflux. The wedges are 6-8" in height at the top to 1-2" at the
bottom, they are covered on cloth and then a diaper wrap is attached in the
middle to help hold the baby in place and not slide down.
I tell parents with babies suspicious of Reflux that they hold them upright
for at least 20 mins after a feeding, then during the day place them on their
tummies while they are near by. Also to avoid the car seats unless in the car
and not to feed a baby and then place them in these seats.
This 'back to sleep' I think is going to have more negatives than positives.
I do not see any teaching to parents that some prone is important to babies,
more the fear driving into them that their babies will die if put on their
stomachs.
Now I will get off my soap box.
