Magda, It is good to hear from you. Your comments to Lactnet always make me
stop and think.

First, we are talking about two different things here - the Breastfeeding
Diary sheet is just a blank form, with the columns, as indicated, to be
filled-in. There are no specific guidelines written on this sheet.

Second, I briefly described some of the teaching I do, which includes the
guidelines of at least 8 BF in 24 hours. This number of feedings is
referred to in Riordan and Auerbach's Breastfeeding and Human Lactation; Amy
Spangler's Breastfeeding, A Parent's Guide; Ruth Lawrence's Breastfeeding: A
Guide for the Medical Profession; and the New York State Dept. of Health's
Infant Feeding Education in the Hospital.

No, this is not a "rule", but a guideline, along with adequate urine and
stool output, that gives us an indication of adequate feeding in the early
days. I present it that way to Mom's when we discuss signs that
breastfeeding is going well. I also routinely discuss the fact that most
babies don't have that many BF's in the first day or two, but should pick-up
to that and continue throughout the first month. I also tell them that
after the 8 days of the diary sheet, they should not need to keep track
anymore and should just watch the baby.

Most of my discharges are between 36 and 48 hours for vaginal births and 3
days for C/S births.

I hope this clears up any confusion
