Anne,
Can you define for us what the role of the CDP is in relation to the media
campaign? The term regional resource site sounds to me as though these sites
are accountable for the coordination of media campaign activities for their
region. At an affiliate meeting recently, it was stated by the CDP coordinator
for the Chicago-area that they received funding for use with the media campaign.
Are these funds intended to be used only at the site of the CDP or are they
to be distributed across the region? I'm really unclear as to the level of
collaboration between myself as a media campaign trainee and the role of the
CDP. I would think that collaborating on press releases and the use of other
media resources would be more effective if these tasks were organized by the
coordinator and dispensed amongst the region. But, perhaps I'm totally
misinformed about the role of the CDP coordinator and that it is indeed meant to be that
the monies to fund the media campaign are intended to remain at the one
Chicago-area hospital where the coordinator works, and that I am indeed left
without any funding or collaboration to tend to the local newspapers, magazines,
etc. of my own accord in terms of monies and time-allotment.

Aligning this concept of media participation to a breastfeeding mom sounds
like this to me:
I'm on my own breastfeeding my baby without the support of other moms, a
support group such as La Leche League, or an LC. Therefore, I need to initiate
contacts on my own accord, and I have no one else with whom to collaborate to
achieve my breastfeeding goals and when I called my lactation consultant to see
whether I could collaborate with other moms who are presently breastfeeding as
I am, I'm told I need to fend for myself. Nope! There's no help available
here....you're on your own! You need to find other moms on your own, despite
the fact that we have resources here, you're not able to access them.

I have a couple of questions. 1.) Do we value the role of support for a
breastfeeding mom? 2.) Do we foster collaboration of the health care team in
meeting the needs of the breastfeeding mom? 3.) Then my last question.....why do
we not model these values within and amongst each other as LCs? (And, I want to
clarify for the readers that my intent here is not one of negativity nor of
blame since it's difficult to convey my tone via e-mail as a poor communication
modality. I am conveying these ponderings with sincerity and with utmost
good intentions to strive to achieve a momentum such as Karen's suggestions to us
for resolutions. And as others have recently been stating on Lactnet,
collectively we can make a huge impact across the world for breastfeeding if we all
work together.)

Happy Holidays Everyone!
Sincerely,
Carol Chamblin, RN, MS, IBCLC
