Something similar happened in D.C. this past winter I believe. A woman
was a passenger in a car and her husband was driving (I think this is
how it was). They actually got into an accident and although no one was
injured it was a similar story. Luckily on the news no one really put
too much emphasis on the fact that this woman was nursing her baby, but
more that the baby wasn't in a carseat.
No matter how nutty I am about breastfeeding in general, this woman was
wrong. I can't believe they're going to countersue. It's not an issue
of feeding your baby when the baby is hungry, it's an issue of pull
over the car so you can nurse the baby and then continue on your trip.
Not that it's right to not be restrained in a vehicle, but leaning over
to nurse while someone ELSE is driving makes more sense than this. I've
definitely done it on more than one occasion. It sounds as if she was
alone so obviously this wasn't an option but how did she get the baby
out of the carseat to begin with to nurse? She had to have stopped the
car to get the baby; what did she do, get in the driver's seat and then
get back on the interstate? If she was already stopped I don't get why
she didn't nurse the baby at that point and then continue? It almost
sounds as if they're using breastfeeding here; do you know what I mean?
And if that's the case, that really stinks it up for the rest of us.
My .02!!
Karen
