Dayna,

Your question on a resource for physicians on stopping breastfeeding due to
diahhrea sent me looking into the publication of "Infant Feeding - The
Physiological Basis", edited by James Akre and put out by the World Health
Organization.

This book states on page 88, "the benefits of b-fdg appear to be related to
the presence in the intestinal lumen of the products of breastmilk digestion
(amino acids, dipeptides and hexoses), which may enhance the absorption of
sodium and water, thereby reducing the frequency and volume of stools.
Breastfeeding thus appears to be beneficial both nutritionally and in terms
of the clinical outcome of the diarroeal episode".

There is much more, including reference in the back of the chapter for
specific studies verifying these findings. If this has peaked your
interest, please contact me by private E-Mail. Hope this helps!
