To help contain unnecessary formula supplementation in the hospital, some hospitals have put formula in their medication distribution system, like Pyxis. This means that all formula is within a locked system and nurses must sign it out like any other medication. The system keeps track of which nurse signed it out for which patient and why. This allows easier auditing of formula use and helps locate staff that may need more education on the use of supplemental formula for breastfed infants. Formula bottles are not placed in bassinets nor are eight packs given to mothers at discharge. A policy on formula supplementation is only as good as its enforcement.
