Dear Friends,
I agree with Tricia that clinically I find "power pumping" to be helpful
to increase breastmilk production. However, I do not do what most mother
(and many of us?) traditionally think of power pumping. I don't know
where I got this or if I made it up but I found the traditional 10 on,
10 off, 10 on, 10 off, 10 on, 10 off, 10 on took too long and my moms
weren't able to get to spending a whole hour pumping. Instead, I have my
moms try to do 1-3 times a day, 5 on, 5 off, 5 on, 5 off, 5 on. A total
of 25 minutes.
They seem to be able to get to this at least once a day. Also, if they
are struggling with low supply by the time they get to the 5 minute
mark, they are dripping milk at best. I even have my moms stop pumping
for 1-2 minutes in the middle of a 15 minute pump. My working moms have
taught me this gets another oxytocin surge going. A mini power pump?
Hands on pumping and hand expression are also critical.
Any one playing around with the new Haakaa pump? I have had a couple of
my moms with second babies who refuse to pump for whatever reason
(usually pump burn out from a past baby) use this little one and it
seems to be better than nothing. They buy two and stick them on at
night and between pumps. No financial interest, just curious what others
are finding.
Warmly,
