I started looking around my jungle (excuse me) - office to see what pix I
may have. I found a copy of American Baby from 1988. A special issue for
their 50th anniversary on 50 ideas that changed the American Baby. There
were several ads for types of bottles, but NOT one ad for formula!

The 50 things that changed the American Baby are: 1. their magazine :-) 2.
Disneyland, 3. Dr Spock, 4. Fitness (exercise), 5. March of Dimes Birth
Defects Foundation (also 50 years old in 1988), 6. Family planning, 7.
Feminism, 8. Abortion, 9. 9. Parenting education, 10. Fluoride, 11.
Superbabies (Is quicker and smarter better?), 12. Caesarians (safer, but are
there too many?-25% in 1988 - don't we wish), 13. Newborn care (Apgars, RDS,
high risk infants, , jaundice, screening tests, apnea monitors), 14. Dr
Suess, 15. Credit cards, 16. Car seats, [No I didn't have such a thing with
my 5-1959-1969] 17.Computers, 18. Contact paper, 19. Prenatal testing, 20.
Polyester, 21. Miracle drugs [antibiotics], 22. feeding baby [starts with
resurgence of BF and discusses bottles and baby foods], 23. Television, 24.
TV shows, 25. fetal surgery, 26. Ideas that came and went...& came back
(weight gain in pg, BF, barrier methods of BC, Natural fibers, wholesome
foods), 27. toys, 28. Prepared childbirth, 29. People who made a difference
(Guttmacher, Bing, Bettelheim, Brazleton, PKU test designer, DNA
discoverers, Sendak, Papanicolaou, Kennell & Klaus, Henson, Burton White,
Friedan), 30. disposable diapers [invented when my last baby was about 2!],
31. Flame retartdant sleepwear, 32. Day care, 33. New ways to make babies
(test tubes), 34. Inflation, 35. Social services, 36. Sinscreens, 37. Family
life (single moms, combined families etc. ), 38. 38. Velcro, 39. Things kids
don't have to learn anymore (tying shoe laces, digital timepieces,
calculators, computers with spell check, 40. Photography [yikes now that is
also gone to digital], 41. modern appliances, 42. CPR & Heimlich, 43. Baby
product safety, 44. Support groups (best known and oldest! LLLI), 45. The
Pill, 46. Pediatric advances, 47. Baby paraphernalia (strollers, carriers,
high chairs, baby tubs, baby shampoo, disposable wipes, pacifiers,
electronics), 48. Immunizations, 49. Things that have made mom's life easier
(shopping malls, toll free catalog shopping, fast foods, supermarkets, food
procesors, food wrppings, TV dinners, Teflon, nylon, Tupperware, 50. What
does the future hold? Comments from 6 baby "experts.

Really made for fascinating reading in the middle of the night! Just 20
years ago! Some of it seemed light years away and some of it brought fond
memories of raising my kids - 1959 to 1969 births, some of it made me feel
good and some- bad. Have we made any progress? Pat in SNJ
