Dear Colleagues: You all have seen the pictures of
rows and rows of cots in shelters. Where do you think
the babies are sleeping? Next to mothers on the cot?
On mother's chest? Is this safe? or dangerous? Are
mom's on the floor sleeping with babies? After the
trauma of the hurricane, should moms and babies be at
all separated? should bed sharing be encouraged as
therapeutic?

The SIDS people are very concerned about this
situation. They fear deaths due to unsafe sleep
arrangements (rollover, suffucation). The majority of
the people in this situation are not breastfeeding
(unfortunately), so what are your thoughts about safe
sleep for these non-nursing couples? Does the feeding
status of the baby change the sleep arrangement?

I would hope that stats are being kept regarding the
numbers of babies who surrived because they were
breastfed? That is an AAP and ABM issue I hope they
will track.

I will be interested in any deaths that are
reported...say from sleeping in bleacher seats in dome
shelters, on cots, etc. I will be looking for these
answers and others at the D.C. SIDS conference. I
welcome any thoughts on this subject. Anne Andrianos
