I just sent my opinion regarding this morning's interview. Here it is:

Dear CBS,

I was really surprised that Dr. Johnston, President of the AAP, is more
concerned about "making women feel guilty" than he is about the public
being informed about breastfeeding as a health issue. He said that
pediatricians use "positive" approaches and claims the breastfeeding ads
use "scare tactics," yet has he ever heard what doctors are telling
mothers in their offices around this country?! Talk about scare tactics -
I am told that if do not vaccinate my children with every one of the many
vaccines currently recommended that there is a very good chance that my
kids will contract some horrible disease and either suffer dramatically or
die. I am told repeatedly to put my infants on their backs or else they
might die of SIDS. I am reminded to keep my children safe in their car
seats while in vehicles, away from medicines in the cabinet, and far from
a hot stove or fire. But never ONCE have I been told to breastfeed or else
my children will be at increased risk for diabetes, obesity, ear
infections, and myriad other illnesses, including increased risk of SIDS.
And I am not being told these facts because Dr. Johnston is afraid I might
feel guilty if I don't breastfeed and my child does acquire one of these
preventable illnesses? I highly doubt any mother in her right mind would
rather be kept in the dark from strides that she could make to help reduce
her children's risk of illness or even death.

If Dr. Johnston is so concerned about guilty feelings among mothers in
this country, he ought to demand his pediatricians stop using "scare
tactics" so that every mother leaves their offices with needle marks in
their infant's thigh.
