«I haven't read this stat anywhere (and would be appreciateive if anyone has
a source) but regardless, it is also the case that many children resume
breastfeeding after weaning given the opportunity. My research into long
term breastfeeding found that about 20% of the children had weaned at some
time- sometimes because of pregnancy- and had then restarted.»

Karleen, I was under a similar impression. A number of years ago when my
oldest (now 8) was little, I did an informal survey. I believe I asked on
LN but also on other parenting groups where I knew there were a number of
extended and tandem nursers. I asked specifically that moms who were very
open to tandem nursing and who were *not* trying to wean their older baby
answer, and that moms who were actively *trying* to discourage weaning not
answer, b/c I wanted to see what happened with the *kids*.

I don't have the "data" anymore on my computer but if I recall I had several
hundred responses (some from the same mom with subsequent babies) all told,
and about 1/3 of boys and 1/4 of girls weaned during their mom's pregnancy.
Of those that weaned though, boys seemed more likely to resume nursing than
girls after the new baby was born. In my "cases" I had one baby as young as
3 months old when her mom got pregnant with the next child (that mom noted
no reduction in milk supply during any of her pregnancies and nursed at
least 5 children through subsequent pregnancies of other children, sometimes
nursing 3 at a time...). I also had, as the "oldest" child in the "batch",
one who I believe was 72 mos old when his mom got pregnant. I remember that
both the youngest (3 mos) and oldest (72 IIRC) at time of conception did
*not* wean during pgcy but the ones who weaned, their ages at conception of
the next baby were pretty much all over the place.

I particularly did this "informal survey" because I wanted something, even
if not really "scientific" to base myself on. I didn't really *want* my
daughter to wean during pregnancy, or at least not *due* to pregnancy/milk
reduction. There was no guarantee but by the time I had compiled all the
results, I was comfortable that if she really wanted/ needed it she'd
continue. :-)

As it was, I got pregnant when she was 23 mos and she didn't wean. Not
until she was 6 yo. :-)
