Kathy D. states "it would be much better for everyone concerned if
the mother was told 'You must stop smoking.'"  For many this would
be true, but I fear that given that ultimatum, too many moms would
say, "it's too hard for me to quit (or I refuse to quit) so I will
opt not to breastfeed."  While we would hope that the needs of the
baby are her highest priority, in reality that's not always the
case.  I'd rather see a mom who's lukewarm to breastfeeding
initially not percieve any discouragement to her nursing.
Hopefully, once she and baby get into it, she'll be hooked (or
perhaps that should be "unhooked") and be better able to consider
baby's needs first when those mothering hormones take over.
