John Snow figured out that cholera was spread by water circa 1830 and was denounced as a wacko because everyone knew disease was spread thru the air by miasmas. It took about 50 years and the work of many others to prove that Snow was right. 

The nursing mothers who founded LLL - using what might well be termed kitchen table research - figured out the basics of breastfeeding. Some 45 years later the AAP endorsed their findings. 

So, does the maternity nurse who has spent her career helping new mothers get their rest by taking their babies to the nursery at night embrace the research showing that mothers rest better with their babies by their side or does she reject it as an aberration? After all, she has years of practical experience on her side, doesn't she? 

Snow didn't live to see his knowledge vindicated. I hope that we do.
