Dear Friends:

Susan's informative post about reverse causality reminds me that the same
principle is used in obstetrics, as in "It's not the
epidural/induction/drugs that cause the problem (lack of breastfeeding,
injured and premature babies, and injured, disconnected mothers)....it's the
labor itself that was problematic that required the use of all the
technology." (Except that women in the US rarely go into labor on their own
any more and all the technology is routine...........big SIGH)

I got reports from the nursing faculty at the university where I gave 2
lectures (one on breastfeeding, and one on relationship-based
bottle-feeding) and 7 one-hour skills labs on creating the environment for
breastfeeding (skin to skin, baby self-attachment, and hand expression). The
students were aghast at what they saw nurses doing in the hospital and at
how much formula was used. That made me feel good,, that students have
evidence about best practice and can contrast it with what they see.

As for benefits of breastfeeding in developed countries, the AHRQ report <
http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/tp/brfouttp.htm> titled "Breastfeeding and
Maternal and Infant Health Outcomes in Developed Countries" is a fabulous
FREE meta-analysis that is useful ammunition for us all.

warmly,
