Dear wise ones, I had a distressed mother come to see me today, and I have
her permission to post. She is currently 34 weeks pregnant with her second
child. Was diagnosed with Graves Disease last November when her first
child was 8 months old, breastfeeding was going well until at this time
and then it all 'fell apart'. Baby become extremely unsettled, feeding 1-2
hourly ( for about three weeks ) and self weaned. Mum feels that a lot of
it was to do with the stress she was experiencing about the diagnosis.
She is currently taking Proprylthioracil 50mg bd. I have not had any
experience with this condition, and have done a search of the archives
with no recent information/discussion found.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could assist me with information to
address her concerns. Specifically, her endocrinologist has warned her
about the baby having transitional hypothyroidism, which usually leads to
extremely unsettled behavours. She is wondering about a plan to manage
this. Her other major question was is there any impact from her illness
and/or treatment on her breast milk volumes or composition. This lady is a
delight and I thank you all in advance for assisting me to give her the
best/most appropriate information and advice.
