I am catching up through the archives, so this may be moot by now. I would
be thinking tongue-tie if the baby is gaping but not maintaining a grasp of
the breast nor transferring milk and mother is sore. Agree with the person
who advised pumping to really drain the breasts well at least several times
a day as long as shields are being used. Also agree that it is probable the
baby is already gaining weight from some unknown low point and once you have
ascertained that the weight curve is pointing upwards, who cares whether it
is seven or nine or five percent, the problem is being fixed and
supplementation is not indicated unless mother refuses to feed the baby herself.
I love it when I have more than two weight recordings to go by. Birth
weight, weight at discharge, and weight at every BF-related contact
thereafter until it is obvious things are going normally. Of course all the
weights are done naked.
