I hope you'll get some other replies on this, Judy, but I'd like to 
chip in with a plea not to make this solely a breastfeeding issue. It 
is absolutely not good for a baby of 6 weeks to be separated in this 
way from his primary care giver - this does not support healthy 
emotional or  psychological development, and there will be plenty of 
research you could cite on this.

It worries me when breastfeeding becomes the centre of these 
disputes, because it then  plays into the hands of those who would 
say the answer would be simply to stop breastfeeding - and then that 
deprives the baby of the breastfeeding *and* it permits disruptive 
care of the baby.

At this tender age, the baby needs breastfeeding *and* his mother 
without interruption.
