I had a consultation with a couple that will be bringing their new, first
baby to me for pediatric care. Mom is planning to breastfeed and wondered
if her particular situation would make any difference. Mom is currently 46.
She is pregnant by "embryo adoption" in which embryos from another couples
IVF cycles were used. Her husband has Klinefelter's syndrome and is
infertile. Mom has no history of infertility herself and was still having
regular cycles at the time of her embryo transfer. She does have mild
gestational diabetes and is on metformin for that, but is otherwise healthy.
Her obstetrician is planning to induce her this week (not really for any
medical reason, more due to the fact that this is a "precious baby") She is
currently 39 weeks.
I'm thinking that her age alone and the fact that she conceived artificially
should not affect breastfeeding, but thought I'd ask you wise ones if there
is anything we should watch out for. (Besides the usual concerns with
induction and possibly a cesarean birth, and the mild gestational diabetes.)
