I think Laurie is on to something.

<it seems there was something about hypoglycemia?
have mother eat a cracker or something prior to or during pumping? or a
nourishing drink?>

I would say start eating or drinking 10-20 minutes before pumping if
possible to be sure digestion has time to elevate the blood sugar.

:-)Still "employing myself" each morning to bring order out of chaos in
my filing system. Just an hour ago I stopped to momentarily "skim" a
complicated article, and when I read Laurie's post, knew just where to
find it:

Uvnas-Moberg K, Eriksson M. Breastfeeding: pjhysiological, endocrine and
behavioural adapations caused by oxytocin and local neurogenic activity
in the nipple and mmary gland. Acta Paediatr 1996;85:525-30.

"The oxytocin-related elevation of glucagon and glucose levels makes
maternal glucose available for transport to the mammary gland. Since the
number of insulin receptors is increased in this area and decreased in
other maternal energy stores, the suckling-related insulin release will
cause a "suckling-dependent" transfer of glucose and possibly of other
nutrients to the mammary gland."

"The levels of gastrin and cholecystokinin (CCK) are raised . . . . ."
Could also be responsible for the sleepiness.
