Thanks to Morgan and Barbara that have given suggestions on educating
healthcare workers on breastfeeding, particularly on skin to skin. I too
have 50 minutes to teach breastfeeding. I need more tips! I am working
with a very resistant task orientated L&D department which does not see
the importance of s2s or breastfeeding. Their M.O. is to get mother
delivered without hemorrhage and with a live born and transferred to the
mother baby unit as fast as possible to make room for the next patient.
The conveyor belt system that has been in place since the dawning of
modern obstetrics in the USA. What I am looking for is video footage of
mothers delivering babies in US hospitals with all the machines that go
beep, and babies that are put straight away s2s. Unfortunately, the
medical culture in my world is very ingrained and ethnocentric. The
Unicef video did nothing for them. The only comments I got were, "where
are their gloves?". I am hopping to put together a montage of brief
videos that show hospital births (the more medicalized the better) with
baby put s2s after brief drying and ABC's assessed. It would be great
if any of them showed the baby s2s while nurse is doing footprints, id
bracelets, vital signs and all those way more important things while the
placenta is being delivered or the episiotomy (yep, still routine in
these parts) is being stitched. If anyone can direct me to youtube
births or have any home grown deliveries to share, I'd be delighted. I
have access to internet so if they are there I can bring them up without
copyright issues. Maybe if the staff see enough that other like
institutions can do it, they may not be so resistant to change. Sorry
for the sarcasm and negativity, it is sometimes not all bad, but for the
New Year I am desperately seeking solutions towards healthier birth and
beyond.
