Just to follow up...I really have been interested in all of the advice and
ideas that have been offered about this now almost 4 day old baby. To catch
up...mom's breastmilk came in yesterday and she had gotten a L------pump and
was overjoyed to be able to pump 3-4 oz and is now feeding the baby on demand
all the breast milk he desires. She has backed off trying to latch him on
and I think besides getting his nutritional needs met this is probably the
best idea. She is continuing to hold him "skin to skin", with nothing on
above the waist and he just in a diaper. He seems to enjoy this unless he is
hungry and then he starts to fuss and wants to be fed. He will even go into
a nursing position calmly. As soon as he was brought to the breast he would
start to come unglued. So the pedi and mom agreed that just giving him lots
of comfort at the breast without latching is probably the best idea...I tend
to agree. The mother is thrilled to pump and feed breast milk for now and
the baby is much happier and hopefully with time and continued patience he
will show more interest in the breast. I do suspect some problem at the
hospital. Unfornately this patient did not deliver at the hospital where I
work and they just sent her out the door without ever establishing
breastfeeding with a bunch of ABM. She did say that the baby was arching his
back and crying the same way in the hospital and I do know that she had an
epidural because she told me she had been too out it to nurse just after
delivery. I will try to get more of a history tommorow when she sees the
pedi. I have also encouraged her to see an LC from my hospital and will even
make the appointment for her if she wants. Thanks so much, this has been a
great learning experience for me. I had never seen a baby get so frantic
like that when attempting to latch on. All of the advice and information has
been helpful.
I will continue to keep you posted.
