Stacy, what a tragic story.  But I am not persuaded that what happened to
this baby had anything to do with breastfeeding.
Newborns can develop apnea spells just because of the recovery of the
delivery.  This is more common in C-section babies but also observed in NSVD.  Since
the parents have refused an autopsy there will be no definitive answer.
If your hospital sets a policy of not being able to breastfeed after
delivery.  I would ask them to show you the literature that this is the best a safest
for a newborn.  Teaching the parents what to look for in an infant who has
stopped breathing would be a better way to address this issue.
