You ask about tattooing. I recently looked this up, and found some
quite mixed info. One of the main problems IMHO is that because
tattoos are classified as cosmetic, there can be lack of regulation
of tattoo parlours. I'd want to be sure that a client understood the
risks to her own health, as well as her baby's. Tattoos breach the
skin and there can be the risk of allergic reactions to the dyes,
skin infections, granulomas, blood-borne diseases (Hep B &C, tetanus
as well as the biggie, HIV). Some links below give an idea of the
very divided opinion about tattooing, including while breastfeeding,
and including some quite alarming pics:

To be cynical, the insurance company may be wary about whether a
mother is pregnant or breastfeeding because it doubles their risk
should something go wrong. And, naturally, the baby cannot give
informed consent :-( Who knows?

The question arose from a mom who was told she could not get a tattoo
because she was breastfeeding. Of course, it was explained that the
risks are the same whether a mom is breastfeeding or not; did a
little research on tattooing websites to find out their
recommendation. Many of the "Consent to Tattoo" forms do state "I am
not pregnant or nursing". I have an email in to a company who insures
tattoo palors and provides oversight for liability, as to why this is
on the form. Awaiting a reply. Any others have some insight on this?
