They need to have a LC on their editorial staff to give input about BF
related stuff they are putting out. I looked at the April 99 issue. On page
14 they are reccomending pumps for working moms. They list the Pump in
Style, Avent Isis, and (gag) the First Years double battery powered pump
called "Simplicity Electric." This is quite honestly the worst pump I have
ever seen. It does nothing. I have had several women present to me "unable
to pump" after trying with this pump. If the magazine cannot hire an LC to
oversee this sort of thing...they have no business writing an article like
this at all. What did the author do? Go out and stand in the supermarket
and choose the pumps with the prettiest carrying cases?

Sad, but they don't even realize what they are doing. I met with some of
the
AB staff some years ago to edit some stuff, and even write a piece for
them,
and the fact is they just don't see the words and their power. They were
not
adverse to my changes or suggestions, but they were incapable of seeing the
impact some of the article's phrasing and advertising placement has unless
it
was pointed out to them. Please write them, and keep writing them. They
need
educated people continuing to point out what they cannot yet see. Many
women
read their magazines, and the fact that they printed some absolutely awful
breastfeeding information, years later, and I severed my ties with them,
in
a letter to the editor they actually printed, still has not changed
anything,( except that I am still without a writing job). They need many
people to send them letters, as individuals, or nothing will ever change.
Sad, but true.
