Jaye, do not go down that dark black hole. This Doubting Grandma will take
the studies that you have spent hours uncovering -- hours which could be
spent offering the lactating mother information and support -- and find
fault with them.

You probably have Lawrence on your desk, or Riordan. I have Kittie Frantz'
cards on my desk and in my black bag. They all talk about 1/2-1 ounce per
day weight gain in months 0-3. Even if we take the low end of that
spectrum, your client's baby is coming up short. At the minimum baby should
have gained 4.5 ounces in 9 days -- not 3. Just whip out that book, show
her the page, and then turn back to your client.

The hard part, of course, is that Doubting Grandma is such an important
influence in new Mom's life, and you will absolutely Not Win a battle
between the Temporary IBCLC and the Forever Grandmother. So this one may
take all the good counseling skills you can squeeze out of your pores, to
get Grandma to see that her role is to nurture her own child -- not give her
doubt -- so she in turn can accomplish the hard work ahead of her to nurture
and feed her newborn.
